Sigh ! Where do I begin with Leanne Marshall’s show ? I’ve been in love with her designs ever since I first saw her work featured on NYC Dance project’s Instagram feed. I’ve illustrated her work before here and here.
So, if it looks like I’m a fan, well , that’s true. The show had beautiful color palettes – black, warm colors – brown, burgundy, sunshine yellow, pale greys all with flecks of gold in some of the dresses. The dresses are to die for. Every model looked like a princess as they floated past us . And if you can tell from the photos, I got a nice seat for this one .
Leanne Marshall’s work inspires me to draw every single one of her works. Maybe someday ! In the meantime, enjoy the photos, videos and the illustrations. Her work should always be recorded in slo-mo !
I couldn’t wait to illustrate them. The fabric, the silhouettes, the colors, the sheer, the drama – all make for beautiful illustrations and create themselves all on their own .
I had wore lovely Pierre Cardin blouse with a brown skirt with tiny orange flowers all over it. It was a summery look on the outside which contratsted with very wintery (multiple!)layers on the inside. It was frigid weather with the wind blowing in every direction possible – or as I like to call it – Penguin Weather.
I attended two shows on this day. The first one was Herve Leger – an arm of BCBGMaxAzria.
Herve Leger show was packed with grunge glam excitement. The dresses were a slight shift from their bandage style dresses that they are known for. The make up , the hair , the dresses and the boots (!) were all on point . My photographs were so bad , they are not worth posting. But I loved creating the illustrations. Don’t these ladies look like they are ready to take on the world ?
Now if I could get the stylists to do my hair like them , that’ll be awesome. I love working on hair details, if you haven’t realized by now.
AND the boots .. can we agree that a dress with boots works for every occasion ?
I have been absent for sometime. Here is where I can get wordy and write about what lights my fire. I have been gone for good reasons – not excuses ! Late in January ( like the 31st of January) , I decided that I was going to attend New York Fashion Week. I felt like I had to experience it all myself, in person. I wanted to work on runway sketching and sketch live as much as I could. I wanted to meet the people I have befriended on Instagram.
Not knowing how to go about it, I still did. I had no idea if I was going to get passes to attend shows, considering I had never been to one. But, I decided the days I wanted to be there and the shows that I really REALLY wanted to attend .
Once I did that, I made my requests for shows. And I was blessed with passes for most of the ones that I asked for . I was at NYFW on the 12th and 13th of February .
As the days drew closer, so did the weather forecast – one of the coldest weekends that New York City was going to experience. So fun.
I felt my entire experience was a learning one. I figured out that this is the right place for me to be. I am doing exactly what I am supposed to be doing. I met some of the friends that I wanted to meet. So much more fun meeting in real life . I met some kind strangers and befriended them . I realized I was one of the few women who moved between shows all myself ! Everyone had a girlfriend, associate, fellow blogger , colleague – you name it ! But when you are by yourself, your instinct to work your way to being noticed and meeting new people kicks in.
Both days were cold. Friday was not as bad as I thought it would be. I was wearing a bright orange dress by AND – Anita Dongre’s western line. I picked it up when I was visiting India in December. I made sure to dress in layers . And I was glad I did !
Do I have pictures of my looks from either day ? Of course not. Because that would mean, I’d be very organized about my own OOTD . I was , of course, obsessing over other people’s looks. Fashionistas who braved the cold and were dressed in short dresses and killer heels. Ladies, I don’t know how you do it.
The SHOWs :
Finally , lets talk about why I went to New York . I was to attend 3 shows on Friday and 3 shows on Saturday – a total of 6 shows. I was able to make it to 5 of them. Turns out 3 shows a day can be pretty busy. Lucky for me 4 of them were in the same spot and one was further away. On Friday, all three shows were in the same place . So I did not have to travel from one spot to another. I stayed pretty close to the venue during the breaks between shows and met up with blogger friends and Instagram friends , as and when I could.
The first show that I attended was Tadashi Shoji . I am a huge fan and I love his dresses for their feminine quality. Sublime and simply gorgeous.
According to the show notes, this was a ‘remix of body orientation’ and concluded with ‘ gather your tribe. The night is young.’ The mood for the show was very mysterious and I could not wait to see the collection.I wish I had better pictures to share from this show, but I was at the top row and my pictures just aren’t good enough to share, but I’ll share them anyway !
The collection had sheer, geometric patterns, intricate designs that had a tribal feel . Colors – black, dark purple to copper tones.
Even from where I was sitting I knew wanted to sketch the two looks below ! I guess, there’s something about the design or the fabric that captures my eye.
Here’s the man himself !..a grainy image , I apologize .
And finally … 🙂 Below are a few looks illustrated , my favorite part. I have to say, to see a collection in person, and experiencing it first hand with the music and the vision the designer has , impacted my sketches .
I am obsessed over the drenched hair, the chokers and dark, mysterious coppery eyes that the models sported.
I hope you like the illustrations from this show. I loved detailing the drenched hair, and of course the dresses. Its hard to pick favorites !
I’ll be back soon with the recap and illustrations of few of the other shows that I attended and other looks from NYFW. They are already up on Instagram.
